Hallmark of the O-Ring is its diversity. The Secret Helper: The Back-up Ring
O-rings count among a machine’s most sensitive components, and must be protected from pressure damage. At high pressure, and without this protection, O-rings can be forced into the sealing gap by extrusion, and destroyed. Leaks then result. Some constructions do not permit the sealing gap to be designed so that it is sufficiently small in relation to the system pressure. In such circumstances, the use of a back-up ring makes sense. They protect the O-ring from being destroyed if high pressure occurs or larger gaps must be sealed.
But expertise is required in this respect: Back-up rings with special properties The back-up rings are predominantly made from PTFE. This material’s favorable properties speak for themselves: the enormous temperature range of from -200°C to 260°C, the appropriate hardness and a virtually universal resistance to various media.
PTFE’s flow properties protect the softer rubber rings from mechanical damage. To do so, the back-up rings are fitted behind the O-ring on the non-pressure side or if the pressure direction changes, at both sides. When it is under pressure, the backup ring deforms and therefore bridges the gap that must be sealed.

X-Rings / Quad Rings
X-rings (also known as quad rings or four-lobed seals) offer an alternative seal solution to O-rings for use in reciprocating dynamic or rotary applications.
They are often used in applications where the seal is required to operate under lower pressure and temperature conditions. Under low pressure, high sealing efficiency can still be achieved with an X-ring as the mold parting line is not coincident with the primary sealing faces.
X-rings can typically be retrofitted into existing O-ring grooves with the size often based around the original O-ring size. The square envelope of the X-ring stops the seal from twisting and rolling, preventing spiral failure often seen when O-rings are used in reciprocating applications. X-rings can be manufactured to standard O-ring sizes, as well as custom sizes for specific applications.
X-rings can also offer a reduction in friction as trapped media between the lobes can provide lubrication to the sliding sealing face. For low pressure applications, the combination of a low modulus material and small cross section can help to reduce friction. In high pressure applications, the friction can be reduced by selecting a higher modulus material with a reduced coefficient of friction.
High performance materials
With an unrivalled range of elastomer materials available, ISMAT has an elastomer for every application, with performance characteristics that meet high temperature, high pressure and aggressive chemical applications.
Energized lip seals comprise of a high modulus elastomer, (or high grade engineering plastic) jacket and a low modulus elastomer O-ring energizer. The low modulus O-ring energizes the jacket under low pressure conditions to increase the sealing force allowing them to be used in low and high pressure applications.
Energized lip seals provide a versatile sealing system for uni-directional pressure applications in either static or reciprocating dynamic conditions. Energized lip seals are symmetric in their cross section and so they can be used in both rod or piston grooves. Backup rings can be used in conjunction with energized lip seals to enhance extrusion resistance.
There are various profiles of energized lip seals available with differing qualities depending on application requirements.
D-rings offer another alternative seal solution to O-rings for use in reciprocating dynamic or rotary applications. They offer the same sealing characteristics as an O-ring and can be used in both low and high pressure application across a broad range of temperatures.
D-rings can typically be retrofitted into existing O-ring grooves with the size often based around the original O-ring size. The flat geometry on the base of the D-ring stops the seal from twisting and rolling, preventing spiral failure often seen when O-rings are used in reciprocating applications. D-rings can be manufactured to standard O-ring sizes, as well as custom sizes for specific applications.

Wiper Seals - Scraper Seals
Wiper seals are also known as scraper seals, excluders and collars. Their primary role is to provide a physical barrier to limit the ingress of moisture, dirt and other contaminants from piston rods used in hydraulic systems into the primary sealing system. This prevents external contamination from damaging internal seals and other system components.
Wiper seals are typically used in conjunction with other sealing elements and require a snap in fit into rod groove locations, complimenting a primary sealing solution.
A Square Ring is a sealing device made in the form of a torus (round top view), with a square-shaped cross-section (side view).
Other names for Square Rings are Washer Rings, Lathe-Cut Rings.
The primary reason for using a Square Ring in a sealing application is that they perform the sealing function in a superior manner – and at a cost lower than any other comparable sealing device. For existing applications, there is no need to change the design or procedures. Square Rings fit in o-ring grooves and are interchangeable size-for-size.
Square Rings are available in a variety of rubber and plastic materials such as NBR, Viton, EPDM, Teflon, etc. In most static applications, a Square Ring will serve as a direct replacement for an o-ring and generally will perform a high-pressure sealing function as well as or better than an o-ring.
